** Catholic estimates are based on the findings of the 2007 U.S. Religious Landscape Survey, reported by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life. The proportion of self-identifying adult Catholics in each racial/ethnic and age group was applied to the U.S. Census Bureau's population estimates for July 1, 2007. These estimates are different from the official count of U.S. Catholics, which is based on diocesan records. The official count now stands at around 67,500,000, but it does not include any measure of race or ethnicity. Instituto Fe y Vida believes that the considerable difference between our estimates and the official count is mostly due to the underrepresentation of self-identifying Hispanic Catholics in parish registers and diocesan records.
